Barry is singing so stuff

Paige Fleming, publisher and chief executive officer of Nevada Woman magazine, hosted her final Woman to Woman luncheon Friday at Wynn Las Vegas. It was a bittersweet day for Fleming, who told her 620 guests that she is leaving the magazine after 12 years. The eighth annual luncheon featured a champagne reception with a drawing for 32 items, which raised $30,000 to benefit The Meadows School Scholarship Fund and Miracle Flights for Kids.Guests included Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian, Phyllis McGuire, Claudine Williams, Kitty Rodman, Melinda Cook, Irene Schwartz, Rebecca Boman, Nancy Houssels, Joan Deiro, Sharon Jenkins, Paula Brown, Linda Steen, Cara Roberts, Karen Zamboni, Jena Dougton, Jan Rude, Kimberly Maxwell, Katy Barin, Patsy Brinton, Lara Kolberg, Dee Ladd, Bill Martin and Siegfried Fischbacher. (Fleming once performed with Siegfried & Roy in Las Vegas.)

The program opened with the Chippendales dancers inviting guest Stephanie Markham to join them onstage for a serenade of "I'm Your Man."

McGuire introduced surprise guest Barry Manilow, who sang a few of his hits, and then joined him for a duet of "Sincerely" and "Teach Me Tonight."

When the applause died down, there was a loud motor noise from the rear of the ballroom as a Harley-Davidson motorcycle roared down the aisle carrying Mayor Oscar Goodman. He introduced the luncheon's featured speaker, his wife, Carolyn, founder of The Meadows School.

Vintage Vegas: St. Viator School Foundation celebrated the school's 40th anniversary at a gala dinner and auction at South Point Saturday.

Arriving guests were greeted by an Elvis impersonator and a showgirl.

The ballroom was filled with large hot pink balloons, and dining tables showcased overlays of metallic pink eyelash shag lame with tall martini glasses filled with lit ice cubes as centerpieces.

The event honored two couples: Cathy and Marty Flynn and Susan and Joaquin Crame, who have exhibited stewardship to the Catholic community through their gifts of time and devotion.

The Rev. Richard Rinn of St. Viator Catholic Community delivered the invocation.

Greg Harelson conducted the live auction, and the Rev. William Haesaert drew the $10,000 cash prize and $500 scrip winners. Chairing the gala was Maria Gex.

Award winner: The National Jewish Medical and Research Center honored Sandy Peltyn with its National Jewish Humanitarian Award for her philanthropic commitment to Las Vegas at a gala presented by Siegfried & Roy Saturday at Wynn Las Vegas.

The garden reception area was decorated in thousands of flowers and bird cages with a large garden gazebo in the center of the room covered with 35,000 beads and real flowers by Botanica.

A live monkey dressed in a red and gold trimmed suit entertained the crowd as music of Havana by Ricardo Griego and Ramona Esparza filled the air. Showgirls, acrobats and stilt walkers added to the festive atmosphere.

The ballroom was decorated in flowing white chiffon from top to bottom. Tables displayed tall antiqued silver candelabra topped with dozens of white roses or tall glass vases filled with white feather plumes.

During dinner, the acrobatic act of Enkhbat and Amara performed, courtesy of attending guest Franz Czeisler Tihany of Mexico's Tihany Circus. Entertainer Clint Holmes also performed.

Susan Lerner and Blanca Lerman, representatives of the National Jewish Medical and Research Center, presented Peltyn with a crystal sphere award. Siegfried Fischbacher unveiled a portrait of the honoree.

Dinner co-chairs were Lynette Chapelle and Parvin and Ted Jacobs.

Guests included Lorraine Hunt, Dennis Bono, Phyllis McGuire, Tom Cook, Pauline and Richard Holgate, Susie Perrine, Barry Rappaport, Lulu Bubion, Barbara Robinson and Andres Costas, Gayle Anderson, Angie Wallin, Dagney and Scott Rotheiser, Janet and Andy Blumen, Marjorie Fields, Judy and Bill Fleischman, Jon Tullis, Phyllis Schwartz, Tom Dane, Juanita and David Wasserman, Nancy and Jack Weinstein, Selma and Troy Barlett, Winnie and Robert Schulman, Cindy Doumani, Andy Dyrdahl, Kelly Clinton, Loring Jacobs and Jenica Yurcic.Guests used play money to purchase items from a marketplace in the room's corner.

"What's Wrong With The World Mama?"

Music Video Codes by VideoCure

"People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek"

The past week has been a living hell for the United States, the murders in Virgina, bomb threats in New Jersey, and probably some more murders and kidnappings all over the country; I asked myself, what has the world come to? And where are we heading?

I sorry, I refuse to count Cho Seung-Hui as a victim, he dosen't deserve that respect, he is too sick and discusting for that title.

"Where Is The Love?"

What's wrong with the world, mama
People livin' like they ain't got no mamas
I think the whole world addicted to the drama
Only attracted to things that'll bring you trauma
Overseas, yeah, we try to stop terrorism
But we still got terrorists here livin'
In the USA, the big CIA
The Bloods and The Crips and the KKK
But if you only have love for your own race
Then you only leave space to discriminate
And to discriminate only generates hate
And when you hate then you're bound to get irate, yeah
Madness is what you demonstrate
And that's exactly how anger works and operates
Man, you gotta have love just to set it straight
Take control of your mind and meditate
Let your soul gravitate to the love, y'all, y'all

People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek

Father, Father, Father help us
Send some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love (Love)

Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love
The love, the love

It just ain't the same, always unchanged
New days are strange, is the world insane
If love and peace is so strong
Why are there pieces of love that don't belong
Nations droppin' bombs
Chemical gasses fillin' lungs of little ones
With ongoin' sufferin' as the youth die young
So ask yourself is the lovin' really gone
So I could ask myself really what is goin' wrong
In this world that we livin' in people keep on givin'
in
Makin' wrong decisions, only visions of them dividends
Not respectin' each other, deny thy brother
A war is goin' on but the reason's undercover
The truth is kept secret, it's swept under the rug
If you never know truth then you never know love
Where's the love, y'all, come on (I don't know)
Where's the truth, y'all, come on (I don't know)
Where's the love, y'all

People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek

Father, Father, Father help us
Send some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love (Love)

Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love, the love, the love?

I feel the weight of the world on my shoulder
As I'm gettin' older, y'all, people gets colder
Most of us only care about money makin'
Selfishness got us followin' our wrong direction
Wrong information always shown by the media
Negative images is the main criteria
Infecting the young minds faster than bacteria
Kids wanna act like what they see in the cinema
Yo', whatever happened to the values of humanity
Whatever happened to the fairness in equality
Instead of spreading love we're spreading animosity
Lack of understanding, leading lives away from unity
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' under
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' down
There's no wonder why sometimes I'm feelin' under
Gotta keep my faith alive till love is found
Now ask yourself

Where is the love?
Where is the love?
Where is the love?
Where is the love?

Father, Father, Father help us
Send some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love?

Sing wit me y'all:
One world, one world (We only got)
One world, one world (That's all we got)
One world, one world
And something's wrong wit it (Yeah)
Something's wrong wit it (Yeah)
Something's wrong wit the wo-wo-world, yeah
We only got
(One world, one world)
That's all we got
(One world, one world)

HOW RUDE!!! What did she just say???

The Copacabana Catfight: Sharon Stone vs. Barry Manilow

Categories: celebrity feuds, feuds, fundraisers, music, awards
No doubt Sharon Stone did good last night at the Billie Awards when she helped raise a ton of cash for the Women's Sports Foundation.

However, did she really need to do it at the expense of a music legend like "Copacabana" crooner Barry Manilow?
While auctioning off tickets to Elton John's posh White Tie and Tiara Ball, Stone rattled off a list of past attendees, including Hugh Grant, Ben Stiller, Benicio del Toro, Diana Ross, Mary J. Blige and David and Victoria Beckham. "It's unbelievable," Stone said. "There are more stars than you could ever imagine."

Stone swooned over Rod Stewart because he "sometimes comes in a kilt and no underpants, which I have to say I liked—kind of a lot!"

But when Manilow's pic popped up on a monitor, Stone cracked, "Oh, look! That was after the third face lift...I mean, hip replacement."

Manilow's rep declined to comment, but a Manilow pal says Stone should zip it. "That’s a shame that she would stoop so low," the pal said. "It certainly shows her own true colors."

Stone's rep declined to comment.

Barry Manilow's Secrect Wife!
June 1, 2000

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SINGER Barry Manilow has been a lifelong confirmed bachelor, as far as his adoring fans are concerned.

But a Gossip Magazine investigation has uncovered a woman from his long forgotten past: Barry's ex- wife, Susan Deixler, the high school sweetheart he married and then callously dumped when the bright lights of stardom beckoned.

"I never remarried," she says wistfully, 34 years later. "I've gotten on with my life. I wish him well and he wishes me well."

Today Susan, 55, is a holistic healer, who drives an old Subaru and treats patients with acupressure and chiropractic methods at her modest home with peeling paint outside Point Reyes, Calif. Her daughter by another man, Pauline, 26, lives nearby. She also has a son Danny.

And for decades Manilow, 53, has kept her whereabouts a secret from all except his closest confidants. As the singer's fame, wealth and legions of fans grew, Susan became a forgotten footnote on a marriage clerk's dusty ledger.

But in the early 1960s they were just two kids from Brooklyn who fell in love at Eastern District High.

Manilow makes a fleeting reference to Susan in his 1987 autobiography "Sweet Life," but doesn't name her. He remembers Susan as "adorable, small with great legs and a voluptuous figure."

Then a shy, poor boy from a rough neighborhood, Manilow longed to be a singer. But the one thing he wanted more was for Susan, with "jet-black hair, dark brown eyes and a smile that lit up the room" to love him as he loved her.

After many awkward dates and late-night strolls along the East river, just across from the romantic lights of Manhattan where Manilow hoped to be a star one day, they fell in love, he reveals in his book, published by McGraw-Hill.

"I couldn't believe it when she seemed to fall for me as hard as I fell for her."

The two were married first before a justice of the peace and then, at their parent's insistence, before a rabbi. Susan chose Joan De Santis, who had been her best friend since grade school, to be her bridesmaid.

Sadly, Joan has since passed away. But her mother Anne De Santis remembers the happy event like it was yesterday.

"Susan asked Joan to be her bridesmaid because they were such good friends," she says. "They were incredibly excited because it was to be the first wedding in their group of friends.

"They were giggly and so full of life and hope for the future. It was a wonderful time.

"They went to Lord & Taylor's on Fifth Avenue together to get dresses and spent just about every penny they had saved. I remember Joan bought a lovely green velvet dress. She was so pretty and so excited.

"Susan was such a pretty bride. She had beautiful jet-black hair and was so happy. When I think back, it's doubly sad that Barry walked out on Susan and broke her heart. I don't think she ever recovered from the blow."

But Manilow says the marriage was doomed from the start. "Even my friends thought I was rushing into it," he later admitted.

Less than a year after tying the knot, Manilow grew restless. He was getting work in small off-Broadway theaters.

He decided he was miserable being tied down at age 21 and couldn't bear the thought of an ordinary life "with a picket fence on Long Island," says a source.

So he abruptly left Susan, telling her he was going on "this wondrous musical adventure that I saw within my reach."

With those words, Manilow walked out on the "perfect wife" while she cried in disbelief.

"She reacted badly, of course," he said. Angry and hurt, Susan filed for an annulment, which would basically mean the marriage never happened.

When Manilow came back the next day with a pal's truck to clear out the apartment, he discovered Susan had changed the locks on the door.

When he called from a phone booth Susan was "a very distant and hurt woman." She said he could have his clothes, but nothing else, not even his precious piano. Though in the end she did relent and let him have it.

"Joan and Susan talked on the phone all the time during that period," De Santis says. "Susan told Joan that she was very happy. She had gotten on with her life."

On Jan. 6, 1966, the annulment decree was signed and they were both single again.

In the 1970s, Barry's star began to rise after he got a job playing piano in a gay bathhouse in New York with Bette Midler.

Things used to get so wild during performances at the Continental Baths that Manilow once stripped nude and jumped into the pool with a cavorting crowd of gay men in their birthday suits.

"Have you ever seen a thousand naked men with party hats on?" asked Manilow, recalling his hungry years.

"All during the show, people kept passing drinks and joints up to me."

As the party roared into the night, the spectators beckoned the singer to join them in the pool.

"I was thinking: 'I'd love to lose my inhibitions and jump in with the rest of them, but it goes against everything in me.'"

But he finally gave in, stripped off his tux and jumped in.

He went on to top the charts with songs such as "Mandy," "Copacabana" and "I Write The Songs."

Although he's been linked with women, he never remarried.

These days he owns several homes and leads an elegant lifestyle made up of only the finest foods, clothes, cars and furnishings.

"He's Mister Smoking Jacket and Velvet Slippers," says a friend.

"Barry loves to entertain with small dinner parties in his gorgeous mansion in Woodland Hills, always elegantly catered and served meticulously by his longtime staff on the finest china, crystal and silver."

But even though Susan lives a much more modest lifestyle than the one she could have had as Mrs. Manilow, she doesn't begrudge him and doesn't have a bad word to say about her first love.

"I bear him no animosity," she says. "It's a wonderful gift that he has, and he's sharing it with the world."

Barry Manilow Celebrates Two Years in Las Vegas

Posted Feb 28th 2007 12:00AM by Robin Leach

Congratulations to Barry Manilow on the second anniversary of his residency at the Las Vegas Hilton.

Hard to believe it was back on February 23, 2005 that Barry (seen above with Hilton CEO and general manager Rudy Prieto) opened Music and Passion at the resort. But it's not hard to believe it has been nothing but sold-out performances ever since! The irony in all this is that his 2004 tour 'One Night Live One Last Time' played to 250,000 fans in 23 British and American arenas signaling the end of his concert career. But, then came the surprise Vegas show and an even bigger surprise in winning an Emmy Award for his PBS TV special filmed there. Also, his 'The Greatest Songs of the Fifties' not only debuted at #1 on the charts but went platinum selling over one million units. The Hilton promptly extended his contract through to 2008 to celebrate the achievements! Barry's follow-up album 'The Greatest Songs of the Sixties' won him the biggest sales week of his career when it debuted in the #2 spot of Billboard's Top 200!

"We congratulate Barry Manilow on a great year of success," said Ken Ciancimino, Hilton executive vice president. "Barry's phenomenal appeal and his staying power as our long-term headliner make him an enduring symbol in this erratic Las Vegas entertainment market." (Click here to see the enormous, hand-painted mural of Barry, which hangs outside of the Hilton!)

Some stuff on Barry I thought was interesting!

From the November 27, 2005 issue of "The Desert Sun" (Barry's Hometown - Palm Springs - Newspaper)

A Typical 24 Hours For Manilow

A day in the life of Barry Manilow often looks like this when he's performing at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel:
After midnight: Manilow's often watching Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show" on one of his home TVs in Palm Springs. "I could be home (for Leno) every night if I wanted to. I don't because we are treated so beautifully (at the Hilton). When we get off stage, there's a feast awaiting us of either Chinese food or Japanese food or Italian food and we all hang out for a good hour coming down off of the show. Then I put my jeans back on, I get into this private plane and I sleep in my own bed."

6 a.m.: It's daybreak and Manilow soaks up his morning view of the mountains and canyons in South Palm Springs. "I get up at 6 to feed the dogs, then I sit and read the newspaper and go online."

10 a.m.: The business calls start coming. "Usually by 10 o'clock, when the phone starts ringing, it's because of some project I'm in the middle of." Manilow says he deals with business matters "all day long." But he trusts his business manager, Garry C. Kief of Stiletto Entertainment in Los Angeles, to handle most publishing and licensing matters. If someone asks to use his song, "Copacabana," in a movie, Kief or his staff will call "only if they think it might upset me," Manilow says. "I'd say, 'Well, is it a put-down?' If it is insulting to the piece, then I won't let them do it." He has similar feelings about merchandising his name and image on clothing, coffee mugs and more. "If it's got taste to it and a sense of humor to it, I'm all for it."

"There's a store upstairs (from the Hilton Theatre) called the M Store, and month after month they run things by me ... for jewelry, wine, candles. Sometimes I laugh and say, 'Sure,' and sometimes I say, 'No.' But they always run it by me. I know everything that's up there and it's a great store."

Lunch time: Barry says he rarely has time to go out to lunch or shop in the Coachella Valley, but he has been seen at dining spots such as El Mirasol in Palm Springs or Native Foods. "He sits at the least popular table and he's so quiet," said Barbara Thrasher, a waitress at El Mirasol who was one of several restaurant workers rewarded by Barry with tickets to his first "Music and Passion" show in November. "To see him in the show is just amazing."

2 p.m.: Manilow often is mastering or mixing a recording, or arranging a live performance, such as the holiday program he has planned for Thursday's McCallum Theatre benefit. "That's been taking up my afternoons this week. It will be geared toward 'Home for the Holidays,' a show I've never done. I've done those songs, but I've never done anything like that. We're rehearsing for two full days at the McCallum and we put it together just for that one night."

4 p.m.: Manilow guards his voice throughout the day when he's performing in Vegas. Even when his pace is hectic, he'll try to calm himself before leaving his serene surroundings in Palm Springs. "I'm like an athlete. I've got to take care of my throat. I'm drinking tea all day long and I'm not talking. I don't go anywhere. I try to just cool it in the afternoon and I try to do my best every night."

Early evening: Barry flies from Palm Springs International Airport to the Las Vegas Airport. He changes into his formal work attire back stage at the Hilton and is on stage at 9 p.m. He does a sound check only the first day of his monthly runs. For the rest of the time he's in Vegas, his equipment is rarely touched so it's always ready to go. "It's my favorite gig I've ever had. Ever."

"Being in my own room. There is nothing like not being on the road. I mean, certainly an audience of 20,000 at Madison Square Garden, I'm not complaining about that. On the other hand, getting there is a hassle. And, after 30 years on the road, even that didn't make it worthwhile."

10:30 p.m.: "Manilow: The Music and the Passion" is over after 90 minutes. On the night Thrasher and her El Mirasol colleagues saw the show, Barry and his assistant, Marc Hulett of Palm Springs, opted to "make like Elvis" and leave the building quickly to get back to Palm Springs before midnight. Manilow is one of the few Las Vegas superstars who still does two shows on Saturday nights, and he has seen his colleagues Elton John and Celine Dion in their Las Vegas theaters. But he's not one to party all night in Vegas. "I just don't get out. It's too much of a hassle for me to get out."
